Small Zhengluo (small metal gong)

  • Post Date:2006-01-12

In Hakka, it is called “Dingdong” or “Changding.” It is round, like the copper gong, with an external wood frame. There are three holes in its side with a cord passing through them, so that it hangs on the wood frame. In the past, there were two linked together. The high pitch of the two linked cymbals was not the same, differing by about a fifth. Now, only one is used in their place.

It is a Beiguan instrument. It isn’t played in “Blown Music,” only in “String Music.” In Eight Tones music, it controls the tempo. Newcomers to Eight Tones music should begin their studies with this instrument.
